Magnitude 5.4 earthquake rattles Philippines

MANILA, April 4 (Xinhua) -- An earthquake measuring 5.4 magnitude on the Richter scale rattled the Philippine main Luzon Island on Tuesday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said.

The institute said the tremor struck at around 8:58 p.m. (1258 GMT) with an epicenter 7 kilometers northwest of Tingloy in Batangas province, south of Manila.

It said the quake was tectonic in origin and struck at a depth of 3 kilometers.

The quake was felt in Manila and nearby Mandaluyong City, Quezon City, and Manila City, and the provinces of Bulacan and Quezon.

So far the institute has not received any report of damages or casualties.
