4.8-magnitude earthquake hits western Sudan

KHARTOUM, March 16 (Xinhua) -- A 4.8-magnitude earthquake hit western Sudan on Thursday, with no reports of casualty or damage to properties.

"The quake hit an area south of El Obied in North Kordofan State, some 520 km west of the Sudanese capital Khartoum," said Mohamed Abu Fatma Abdalla, director of Sudan's General Authority for Geological Research in a statement.

He added that the quake was at depth of 10.1 km at 12:39 p.m. local time (0939 GMT).

Sudan's General Authority for Geological Research has seven quake monitoring stations operating around the clock to follow up quake activities, with other 15 stations under construction to cover all areas of Sudan.
