MEXICO CITY, Dec. 29 (Xinhua) -- Former Real Madrid manager Santiago Solari has been appointed head coach of Mexico's America, the Liga MX club said on Tuesday.

The 44-year-old replaces Miguel Herrera, who was sacked last week after America's 3-1 loss to Los Angeles FC in the semifinals of the CONCACAF Champions League.

"The sun rises .. for all Americanists. Santiago Solari is our new head coach," the club said on Twitter.

Solari has been out of work since ending a five-month period in charge of Real Madrid in March 2019. His only other experience as a manager was with the Real Madrid B side, whom he led from 2016 to 2018.

As a player, Solari was a talented left-sided midfielder who earned 11 Argentina caps in a career that included spells at River Plate, Atletico Madrid, Real Madrid and Inter Milan.

America finished third in the final standings of the 2020 Liga MX Apertura tournament, which ended this month.

The new Liga MX Clausura season is scheduled to begin on January 7. Enditem
