HANOI, Nov. 21 (Xinhua) -- Vietnam plans to invest over 23,300 billion Vietnamese dong (more than 1 billion U.S. dollars) in expanding two international airports and one domestic airport from now to 2020, the Civil Aviation Administration of Vietnam said on Tuesday.

According to a plan recently submitted to the Transport Ministry for approval, the money will be mainly spent on building new terminals, runways and taxiways of Cat Bi international airport in northern Hai Phong city, Phu Bai international airport in central Thua Thien Hue province, and Chu Lai airport in central Quang Nam province.

All the three airports are predicted to be heavily overloaded in the next few years.

Earlier, Quang Nam authorities proposed the ministry upgrade Chu Lai into an international airport by 2025.

Vietnam's aviation sector served 38.3 million of passengers in the first 10 months of this year, up 11.4 percent on-year, said the country's General Statistics Office. Meanwhile, the sector transported 262,100 tons of cargoes, up 8.8 percent on-year.
