CAIRO, Oct. 21 (Xinhua) -- Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi said Saturday that the anniversary of Alamein battle of the World War II constitutes a drive to exert more efforts to realize peace, especially in the Middle East region which faces perilous crisis.

Delivering a speech during a celebration in Alamein city to mark the 75th anniversary of the crucial battle, Sisi said the unprecedented crises are posing threat to security in the region.

People in the Middle East are looking forward to a stable and decent life, Sisi said, urging the international community to exert all needed efforts to meet people's aspirations.

He noted that the establishment of the new Alamein city was meant to underline the importance of peace and construction.

Alamein Battle, from October 23 to November 4, 1942, was a turning point of the Western Desert campaign during the World War II where the Allied forces led by British commander Bernard Law Montgomery defeated the Axis German-Italian forces led by "Desert Fox" German general Erwin Rommel.

The city is located on the Mediterranean Sea, about 90 km from northern coastal Alexandria province and over 300 km from the Egyptian capital Cairo.
