BERLIN, Oct. 1 (Xinhua) -- A 53-year-old suspect who had allegedly poisoned baby food sold in supermarkets in southern Germany's city Friedrichshafen confessed, and was taken into custody while investigation into the case is underway, German media DPA reported on Sunday.
The suspect had allegedly threatened to put 20 items of poisoned food into circulation, and demanded a double-digit million amount. In the middle of September, he had already added five glasses of baby food with ethylene glycol in a supermarket in Friedrichshafen. Intake of ethylene glycol by humans can be lethal.
After the police released pictures of a surveillance camera, they received hundreds of clues, some of which helped the police arrest the suspect on Saturday.
A police spokesperson was quoted by the DPA as saying that criminal technicians are investigating the computer of the 53-year-old, in the hope of finding out more about the background or motivation.
Local police said the man suffered psychological abnormalities, and the danger from poisoned baby food still cannot be ruled out completely.
