Tripoli, Sept. 29 (Xinhua) -- Unidentified gunmen on Friday assassinated four members of a social reconciliation delegation near the town of Mezda, 140 km southeast of Tripoli, a local source said.

"A tribal reconciliation delegation was shot by gunmen after leaving Mezda in western Libya, and the head of the delegation and his assistant, as well as two security personnel, were killed," Ali Embark, head of the local council of the nearby Bani Walid, told Xinhua.

"The delegation was on a social mission to follow up the reconciliation between Zintan and Mashashiyya tribes. As they were returning, they were ambushed by the gunmen on the road between Mazdah and Bani Walid," Embark said.

No official government statement has yet been issued regarding the attack, and no group claimed responsibility.

"We can not accuse anyone. We are awaiting for the security and forensics reports," Embark said, stressing that the delegation has no political motives. "It is a delegation of reconciliation that is constantly visiting the cities of the western mountain to assist in inter-tribal reconciliation."
