KABUL, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) -- The Islamic State (IS) group on Wednesday claimed responsibility for a deadly attack on a mosque in Afghanistan's western city of Herat.

On Tuesday night, two terrorists armed with guns and suicide jackets attacked Jawadia Mosque in Herat, the capital of Herat province, when dozens of Shiite worshippers were gathering to hold a religious ceremony.

Provincial officials said 31 people, including two children, were killed and more than 60 others wounded.

However, the IS-linked Amaq news website has claimed in an online statement that the IS fighters have killed 50 people and injured 80 others.

More than 1,660 civilians were killed and over 3,580 others injured in conflict-related incidents in the first half of the year, according to figures of the UN mission in Afghanistan.
