NANJING, Oct. 22 (Xinhua) -- A memorial service was held for Shiranishi Shinichiro, the former chairman of the Executive Council of the Japan-China Society, in Nanjing on Sunday.

Shiranishi Shinichiro, born in June 1940 in Hiroshima, Japan, visited China more than 600 times from 1967. From 1986, he planted trees in Nanjing every year to express respect for the victims of the Nanjing Massacre.

The service was held at 9 a.m. in the Memorial Hall of the Victims in Nanjing Massacre by Japanese Invaders.

Zhang Jianjun, curator of the Memorial Hall, said the passing of Shiranishi Shinichiro was a real loss for the friendship between China and Japan.

He was an all-time friend of the Chinese people, said Sun Man, an official of the Foreign Affairs Office of Nanjing Municipal People's Government.

Shiranishi Shinichiro died on October 8, in Osaka, Japan, at the age of 77.
