BERLIN, June 14 (Xinhua) -- Seven months after a terrorist attack by Islamic extremists in Berlin in December 2016, the first meeting of an investigative committee set up by the Berlin House of epresentatives was held on Friday morning.

On Dec. 19, Tunisian Islamic terrorist Anis Amri had driven a truck into the Christmas market at the Berlin Memorial Church, killing 12 people, and injuring almost 70.

The police in Italy shot Amri while he was on the run.

The chairman of the committee, Burkard Dregger, had previously announced an extensive investigation saying, "We want to determine whether and, if so, what mistakes have been made in the defense against terror."

There is already a committee in place in North Rhine-Westphalia because Amri lived there for the majority of his time in Germany.

After the attack, the investigating authorities in Berlin and in North Rhine-Westphalia faced a wave of criticism. The Tunisian had been able to go into hiding, although he was known to the authorities as a potential terrorist.
