GENEVA, July 7 (Xinhua) -- The Intergovernmental Group of Experts on Consumer Protection Law and Policy (IGE) and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) on Friday announced the development of the world consumer protection map.

The tool comes during new global malware attacks and leaks of personal details online, which UNCTAD said hit 200 million people in the United States.

The world consumer protection map is an interactive and easily accessible online tool that will provide an updated and comprehensive picture of consumer protection.

"To protect consumers in this increasingly connected and digital world, it is essential to first have a clear view and understanding of the existing legal frameworks," said William Taborda, information systems officer at UNCTAD.

The agency says it will identify trends and benchmarks for global consumer protection as well highlight challenges that need to be addressed.

The new tool will provide relevant information about consumer protection worldwide and to enable better coordination channels between consumer protection agencies globally.

Such sharing of knowledge will create a better understanding of the different laws and legal frameworks in different jurisdictions, the UN agency said.
