NEW DELHI, July 7 (Xinhua) -- Indian police Friday arrested a popular actor in the eastern city of Kolkata on charges of causing death of a model in a car crash in April this year.
"Actor Vikram Chatterjee has been arrested and charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder for the car accident in which model Sonika Chauhan was killed some three months back. We have solid proof against him," a senior police official said.
Chatterjee, a popular face on TV sops, faces up to 10 years in jail. He was earlier charged by the police for rash and negligent driving only.
The case dates back to April when Chatterjee was driving Chauhan back home after a night-long party. He was driving at high speed under the influence of alcohol and lost control of the car, which hit a pavement and turned turtle.
The actor had earlier told police that he drank alcohol in the party but was not drunk. Initial police probe revealed that the car was driven at a high speed, but could not establish if he was drunk.
