南安普頓大學的電子與計算機系有58位教師，是英國最大的電子與計算機系之一，並有一支陣容強大、氣氛活躍的科研隊伍。在1996的研究評估活動中，本係在電子研究方面獲得了“5＋”（最高分），在計算機科學方面獲得了“5 ”分。1998年，該係在電子學教學方面獲得了24分（最高分）。同時，電子與計算機系與大學其他係或其他大學及工業界也建立了緊密的合作關係。 

研究組及其主要方向如下： 
In the Communications group, there is active research into mobile and rural personal communications systems. The Multimedia research group has achieved international acclaim for its innovative work in multimedia tools and applications. The Declarative Systems and Software Engineering group covers a wide range of activities, with the common theme of software engineering and programming languages. The Parallel and Distributed Computing group specialises in the development of tools and applications for parallel processing. The group hosts a Parallel Applications Centre. The Department has a clean room facility, which is used by the Microelectronics group. The facility for silicon integrated circuit fabrication enables line widths down to 0.1mm to be defined. This allows a variety of novel devices to be fabricated and tested. The fabrication facility has also been used by the Optical Fibre and Optoelectronics group to produce the successful Fibre Laser. The group is further interested in the generation and manipulation of mid and far infrared radiation, and its applications. They have interests in specialist materials concerned with infrared lasers and optics. Research in the Image, Speech and Intelligent Systems group focuses on control and intelligent systems, neural networks and neurofuzzy systems, speech processing and acoustics and computer vision and image processing. The Electronic Systems Design group has been developing circuit simulation systems and VHDL behavioural synthesis for logic systems together with testing and design for test techniques for analogue and digital systems. The group is working on technology to implement microsystems on silicon such as the integration of an electronic nose in silicon and a micromachined humidity sensor.
