Slovenia's daily COVID-19 deaths hit record high

LJUBLJANA, Nov. 24 (Xinhua) -- Slovenia on Tuesday reported 59 COVID-19-related deaths in the past 24 hours, the highest daily death toll yet, taking the total number of fatalities to 1,156.

The same period saw 1,302 new confirmed coronavirus cases, pushing the national tally to 66,919.

The country conducted 5,596 coronavirus tests on Monday, 23.27 percent of which came back positive, down from almost 27 percent the day before and almost 30 percent on Saturday.

Hospitalizations rose by seven to 1,299. There were more than 120 new admissions and 78 patients were discharged. The number of patients in intensive care rose by three to 204.

The government's COVID-19 spokesman, Jelko Kacin, said that infections continued to build across the country, with many hotspots.

Outbreaks at senior care homes continue to be the major problem in Slovenia, with 174 new infections confirmed among the elderly on Monday, bringing the total in this segment of the population to 2,618.

As the world is struggling to contain the pandemic, countries including Germany, China, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States are racing to find a vaccine.

According to the World Health Organization's latest information, 48 COVID-19 candidate vaccines were in clinical trials and another 164 in pre-clinical trials as of Nov. 12. Enditem
