MAPUTO, June 17 (Xinhua) -- Two Mozambican border policemen were shot dead by three South African military officers at the border between the two countries on Sunday, the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) said here on Monday.

The PRM spokesman Juarez Martins told the press that the incident took place at Ponta d'Ouro in Mozambique, a district bordering with the South African province of KwaZulu-Natal, where three South African officers entered the country and shot dead the two border policemen.

Martins said authorities from Mozambique and South Africa are already meeting and an investigation is underway to find out the reason behind the incident.

The PRM chief Bernardino Rafael later told press that the South African officers who shot the two policemen entered 50 meters into Mozambican land.

"We're yet to find out in what circumstances our policemen were killed but the truth is that three South African militaries opened fire against our police patrol," said Rafael, appealing people to trust the police's report instead of the information from social networks.

The district of Ponta d'Ouro is often used as a corridor by illegal immigrants from Mozambique to South Africa.
