GAZA, Dec. 8 (Xinhua) -- Israeli warplanes attacked facilities that belong to militants of the Islamic Hamas movement in the Gaza Strip early Sunday in response to rockets fired from the coastal enclave into the Jewish state hours earlier, Isreal Defense Forces (IDF) said.

"Three rockets were just fired from Gaza at Israeli towns and cities earlier tonight," the IDF tweeted, adding that two rockets were intercepted mid-air by the Iron Dome Aerial Defense System.

"In response, IDF fighter jets & attack helicopters just struck a number of Hamas terror targets in Gaza," the IDF said.

Local media in Gaza reported that Israeli strikes targeted sites belonging to Hamas' armed wing al-Qassam Brigades. There were no immediate reports of casualties.

No one has claimed responsibility for the three rockets fired into southern Israel, which triggered the Israeli airstrikes.

Israel holds Hamas responsible for all rocket fired from Gaza.
