MEXICO CITY, Nov. 12 (Xinhua) -- Evo Morales, who had accepted the political asylum offered by the Mexican government after announcing his resignation as Bolivian president, arrived in Mexico City on Tuesday.

The plane he was on landed at the Mexico City International Airport at 11:09 a.m. local time (1709 GMT).

Morales was welcomed by Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard at the terminal of the airport.

Morales said that he is very grateful to Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador and the Mexican government.

The former president said that he had resigned to avoid more bloody conflict in his country after having been advised by the Bolivian army to leave office.

The president and government of Mexico saved his life, he said.

Ebrard said that it was a joyful day as the asylum Mexico offered Morales had been successful and in Mexican territory, Morales would enjoy freedom, security, integrity and the protection of life.

Morales was accompanied on his voyage to Mexico by Alvaro Garcia Linera, former Bolivian vice president, and Ariana Campero, former Bolivian minister of health.
