UNITED NATIONS, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) -- United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Saturday congratulated Sudan on the signing ceremony of two documents instituting for a transitional period.

"The Secretary-General warmly congratulates the Sudanese people on the occasion of today's important signing ceremony of the documents on transitional civilian authority in the Republic of Sudan," Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for the UN chief, said in a statement.

Guterres reiterated the commitment of the United Nations to assist the transition process as it seeks to achieve the long-standing aspiration of the people of Sudan for democracy and peace, Dujarric added.

The secretary-general also underscored the importance of paving the way for Sudan's socio-economic recovery and setting the country on a path of sustainable development benefiting Sudan's diverse and vibrant society, said the spokesman.

Sudan's Transitional Military Council (TMC) and the opposition Freedom and Change Alliance officially signed the political and constitutional declarations that establish the transitional rule in the African country.

The political declaration, signed by the two sides with initial letters on July 17, determines the structures of the transitional period including the sovereignty council, the council of ministers and the transitional legislative council.

The constitutional declaration, signed with initial letters on Aug. 4, determines the powers of the transitional period structures and members of the transitional government which will last for 39 months.
