Ethiopia receives 36,135 refugees in 2018: UNHCR

ADDIS ABABA, Feb. 19 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) revealed on Tuesday Ethiopia has received 36,135 refugees in 2018.

In a press statement, UNHCR said the arrival of 36, 135 refugees in Ethiopia in 2018, pushed the number of refugees in Ethiopia to reach a total of 905, 831.

UNHCR further said a total of 17, 554 South Sudanese refugees arrived in Ethiopia in 2018, making it the biggest group of refugees to arrive in Ethiopia in 2018.

The South Sudanese refugees were received through camps located in Ethiopia's western Gambella regional state.

Eritreans made up the second largest group of refugees with 14, 567 Eritreans entering Ethiopia in 2018, according to UNHCR figures.

UNHCR also recorded the arrival of smaller number of refugees from Sudan and Somalia in 2018.

Most of the 905,831 refugees registered in Ethiopia come from the strife-torn nations of Somalia and South Sudan and Ethiopia's northern neighbor Eritrea.
