BRUSSELS, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) -- A carpet of over 500,000 flowers was unrolled Thursday at central Brussels' Grand Place.

The carpet, measuring 75 meters by 24 meters, is mainly composed of begonias and dahlias. It took some 100 volunteers about eight hours to assemble the giant floral puzzle.

The event, held every two years since 1970s, is devoted this year to Guanajuato, a Mexican region with an exceptionally rich culture and flower tradition.

Belgium is the world's leading producer of tuberous begonias, with a long flowering period, a wide range of colors and a wide variety of forms. It exports some 30 million tubers annually to Europe, America and Japan, according to information provided by the organizers.

And to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Grand Place becoming a UNESCO World Heritage site, a floral exhibition will also be held at the nearby Bourse square.

Hailed the historical heart of Brussels, the Grand Place is regarded as "the most beautiful central square in the world". Here Gothic style can be seen adjacent to opulent baroque, neo-classical as well as neo-Gothic.

The flower carpet will last until Sunday.
