RIO DE JANEIRO, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) -- Members of Brazil's armed forces and police led a vast operation on Wednesday against drug trafficking in Niteroi, a city in the metropolitan area of Rio de Janeiro, the local military commander announced.
Name Dosis Dupla (Double Dose), the operation saw 2,600 agents from the army and police arrest at least 10 people, with one soldier receiving a gunshot wound to the hand.
The operation carried out 34 search and arrest warrants and seized assets allegedly belonging to drug gangs, including ammunition, bulletproof vests, a drug accounting ledger, a quantity of marijuana, three stolen cars and one stolen motorcycle.
This was the second vast operation carried out in Rio de Janeiro since 10,000 soldiers and police were dispatched there to fight a wave of gang violence that has plagued Brazil's emblematic city.
On August 5, a similar operation arrested 15 people, and seized a number of firearms and grenades.
From June 27 to July 3 alone, the city saw 181 shootings, leaving 49 people dead and 23 more wounded.
