URUMQI, Dec. 20 (Xinhua) -- A 5.8-magnitude earthquake hit Qiemo County in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region at 6:04 p.m. Tuesday (Beijing Time), according to the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC).
So far, no casualties have been reported.
The epicenter, with a depth of 9 km, was monitored at 37.25 degrees north latitude and 84.81 degrees east longitude, the center said in a statement.
The epicenter was 120 km from the county seat of Qiemo. A waiter at Yudu Hotel in the county said the ceiling lamp shook noticeably during the earthquake.
The local government has sent personnel to the affected areas to verify the situation.
