NEW DELHI, Dec. 8 (Xinhua) -- A woman activist has been allegedly thrashed and paraded naked by mobs for her tirade against illegal liquor trade in the Indian capital.
The incident took place Thursday night when the woman, who is a volunteer with the Delhi Commission for Women, was part of a patrol party to identify illegal liquor shops in her area.
"I was dragged and stripped. I only protested against the open sale of illegal liquor and they punished me," the woman said in a video that has gone viral.
The Delhi Commission for Women has said the woman volunteer has "marks of iron rods on her body," and strongly condemned the attack on her and blamed police for the illegal liquor trade.
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who visited the woman in a government hospital Friday, described the incident as "shocking and shameful."
"The woman was beaten with iron rods, threatened with her life. She was also paraded with torn clothes to send a message to the locality," Kejriwal told the media.
Police said they have arrested six men in connection with the attack on the woman, but denied the women was paraded naked.
"She was beaten up but not stripped. We are investigating the allegations and more arrests will take place," a police official said.
Illegal liquor trade is common in India and every year many people fall prey to toxic drinks across the country. Activists blame police inaction for flourishing illegal liquor trade.
