Nearly 900 Bruneians receive free houses

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, Nov. 30 (Xinhua) -- Nearly 900 successful applicants for subsidised housing under two national schemes received house keys from Brunei's Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah on Thursday.

These free houses, under the Kg Panchor project, range from detached to semi-detached to terrace, whose costs run between 45,000 Brunei dollars (33,370 U.S. dollars) to 60,000 Brunei dollars (44,494 U.S. dollars), depending on the location and type of housing, Pg Norhamdiyah Pg Ahmad, head of Housing Development Department of Brunei's Ministry of Development was quoted as saying by local media on Thursday.

According to the Ministry of Development, more than 350 million Brunei dollars (259 million U.S. dollars) have been spent to fund the project, which includes 4,000 detached houses, 2,400 semi-detached and terrace houses spreading over 309 hectares.

The Bruneian government is launching the National Housing Scheme (RPN) and Landless Indigenous Citizens' Housing Scheme (STKRJ) to provide housing and land lots to citizens in need.

Statistics from the Housing Development Department shows that to date free houses and land lots have been provided to over 28,000 recipients across Brunei's four districts under the RPN and the STKRJ.
