COLOMBO, Nov. 30 (Xinhua) -- Inclement weather continues to lash Sri Lanka causing disruption to essential services and triggering fears over floods and landslides, an official said on Thursday.

Power remains disrupted in the most affected areas of the southern and central parts of Sri Lanka, according to the Disaster Management Center(DMC).

The education ministry took steps on Thursday to close schools in four out of nine provinces of the country, DMC spokesman Pradeep Kodippili told Xinhua.

The schools in the Central, Western and Southern provinces were closed as students found it difficult to attend due to adverse weather conditions, Kodippili said.

One person was hit dead by a tree branch on Wednesday and two persons were reported missing after their boat capsized in the south of the island, he added.

Rain experienced in the country up Thursday morning exceeded 100 mm in most affected areas. The DMC warned people to be alert on floods, landslides, rockfalls in the affected areas of the southern and central parts of the country.

Train services on two lines connecting Colombo with the central hills and one of its suburbs called Avissawella were disrupted due to the bad weather.
