TRIPOLI, Nov. 22 (Xinhua) -- Libya's UN-backed Prime Minister Fayez Serraj on Wednesday called for unity among the governors of the divided Central Bank to curb economic crisis.
"The division of the Central Bank contributed to a worsening financial and economic crisis that caused suffering for Libyans," Serraj said in statement.
"I appeal to Seddiq Al-Kabir and Ali Al-Hebri to meet their national responsibilities and distance from political and personal differences," the statement said, calling for an urgent meeting of the board of directors of the Central Bank.
He also asked measures and decisions be taken to unify the bank and come up with a financial policy that actively addresses the Dinar's exchange rates against foreign currencies and ends the lack of funds at local banks.
"I am confident that our country can overcome this crisis when the two parties meet their responsibilities," the statement said.
Libya suffers political division between eastern and western authorities, including the Central Bank.
The country also suffers economic crisis with severe decrease of oil revenues, the country's main source of income, due to years of closure of oil fields and ports by armed conflict.
