GENEVA, Nov. 20 (Xinhua) -- Internationally acclaimed actress and Goodwill Ambassador for the UN refugee agency, UNHCR, Kristin Davis, on Monday called for global attention and funding to provide more life-saving aid for Rohingya refugee children in Bangladesh.
In a statement from Geneva, Davis was quoted on the UN's Universal Children's Day at the end of a visit to Kutupalong Refugee camp in Bangladesh.
"For me, the most shocking part of the Rohingya refugee crisis is the number of children who have had to flee their homes. Over half of the refugees in the camp are children," she said.
Some of them had lost one or both parents and they are on their own.
"These children have faced unimaginable horrors and chaotic violence and then a harrowing journey to safety," said the American TV and movie actress.
Davis said the children are in need of everything including the very basics of shelter, water and food.
"I can't imagine going through what these children and their families have gone through, much less having the strength, resilience and extraordinary bravery these children possess," she said.
Davis noted the situation in Bangladesh to where Royhigyas are fleeing from Myanmar is currently the fastest growing refugee crisis in the world.
She said, "seeing the impact of this emergency on children is devastating."
The actress noted there is in that the UNHCR, along with the Bangladeshi Government and its partners, are working around the clock to ensure refugees are safe, sheltered, and protected.
Violence in Myanmar's Rakhine state has forced over 620,000 refugees to flee to Bangladesh since Aug. 25, bringing the total number of people seeking safety in the Cox's Bazar settlements to over 833,000, the UN migrant agency IOM said on Nov. 17.
