WASHINGTON, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) -- A man accidentally shot himself and his wife during a discussion Thursday afternoon about church shootings at a church in Tellico Plains, U.S. state of Tennessee, media reported Friday.

Police said members of the First United Methodist Church were gathering for a Thanksgiving dinner at around 1 p.m. and began talking about the Texas shooting, which resulted in 26 deaths earlier this month.

When someone asked if anyone brought a gun to their church, a man spoke up and claimed that he carries his weapon everywhere he goes and started passing a handgun around after emptying the magazine and chamber.

After the gun returned to the owner, the man put the magazine back in and recharged the chamber, but accidentally squeezed the trigger, according to police.

A bullet hit the man in the hand and his wife in the abdomen, reports said.

The couple, in their 80s, were taken to a local hospital for non-life threatening injuries. Local reports said both of them were in stable condition.
