HAVANA, Nov. 16 (Xinhua) -- The American Alaska Airlines will suspend its flights to Cuba in January, due to the measures implemented by the administration of President Donald Trump, rolling back the thaw with the island country, the Juventud Rebelde daily reported on Thursday.

The Cuban daily cited a company release announcing a stop to its daily flights between Los Angeles and Havana beginning on January 23, 2018.

According to the statement, around 80 percent of people traveling with Alaska Airlines to the Caribbean country visited the island under the category of "people-to-people" trips, which was eliminated in the new regulations passed by the U.S. government.

"Traveling is making connections, and we were honored to have played a role in helping people to make personal connections with travels between the United States and Cuba," Andrew Harrison, commercial director of the airline, was quoted as saying by the newspaper.

Taking into account these changes in travel policies to Cuba, the airline will redistribute these resources to other markets where demand is still strong, said the company that only began flights to the island in January 2017.

On November 9, the U.S. government put into force new restrictions on trade and travel to Cuba, setting back many aspects of the rapprochement between the two countries begun under former U.S. President Barack Obama.
