KIEV, Oct. 25 (Xinhua) -- At least four people were killed and five others injured in eastern Ukraine in the past 24 hours, marking the highest daily casualty toll in the conflict since August, according to reports from the conflicting parties on Wednesday.
The government military spokesman Andriy Lysenko said that two Ukrainian servicemen were killed in combat with pro-independence insurgents, while two others died after stepping on landmines.
According to Lysenko, four government soldiers were injured in the past day.
Meanwhile, Ruslan Yakubov, an insurgent military representative, said that a 63-year-old civilian was injured by shrapnel during the shelling in the rebel stronghold of Donetsk.
The conflict between government troops and insurgents in eastern Ukraine has been raging since April 2014, claiming about 10,000 lives.
On Aug. 25, the confronting sides declared a ceasefire to ensure children's security ahead of the new school year. The truce has decreased the hostilities in the restive region.
