ANKARA, Oct. 4 (Xinhua) -- A senior Islamic State (IS) leader, Khaider Kareem, also known as code name "Abu Yousef," was detained Tuesday during a counterterror operation in Turkey's capital Ankara, according to local media.

Kareem, who was previously listed as dead in the Iraqi records, was identified to be alive and living in Turkey by Turkish public prosecutor, Daily Sabah reported.

Police units also seized 40 fake identity cards during the search in the militant's apartment.

The captured IS member was referred to the court after necessary procedures at the police department and undergoing health controls.

The presiding judge ordered his arrest over charges of "participating in genocide, being a member of an armed terrorist organization and attempting to overthrow the constitutional order."
