MAPUTO, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- Border disputes between Mozambique and Malawi was reactivated last Thursday when a squad of border guard troops from Malawi entered a fishing camp and fired shots in the air in the district of Chiuta in Mozambique's Niassa Province, local authority in Mozambique said Tuesday.
According to provincial police commander Aquilasse Kapangula, who announced the incident on Tuesday in Lichinga, provincial capital of Niassa, the objective of the Malawian military was to remove Mozambicans who were allegedly fishing on Lake Malawi, in Mozambique known as Lake Niassa.
The commander said after the shots the military withdrew by boat to Malawian territory, but their action caused a great scare not only among the fishermen, but also in the communities living near the camp.
"The day after the incident, we went to Malawi and met with the local police authorities, and it was concluded that in fact the Malawians violated our territory. We also admit from our side that there are some of our colleagues from the Lake and River Protection Force who have collaborated with fishermen in using unsuitable fishing net," he said.
This is not the first time border tensions flared up between the two countries. In 2015, the two governments met to discuss about land demarcations, construction of houses and opening of agricultural fields by Malawi in Mozambican regions.
