MADRID, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- A total of 12 roads were on Tuesday blocked due to a strike called in the Catalan region in the northeast of Spain in protest of police violence during Sunday's independence referendum, which was declared illegal by the Spanish Constitutional Court.

The ports of Barcelona and Tarragona were also blocked with unions, who claimed that 100 percent of dockworkers followed the strike. According to the unions, "hundreds" of local, middle distance and high-speed Ave trains have also been cancelled.

Inter-city bus services are running minimum services "where they are not limited by the blocked roads," and the Barcelona metro is running a minimum service of 25 percent.

Many small shops and businesses have also chosen to keep their doors closed on Monday, while the CGT Union speaks of "barricades" being erected in many industrial estates.

Monday night saw people demonstrate outside several hotels in the region where Civil Guards had been sleeping, with Guards having to leave their rooms in the town of Calella.

Tuesday will also see a demonstration in the streets of Barcelona in protest against police tactics.
