WASHINGTON, Oct. 2 (Xinhua) -- A U.S. service member was killed and another injured on Sunday in Iraq by an improvised explosive devise (IED), the Pentagon said Monday.

The IED struck their coalition vehicle and caused the casualties, a Pentagon spokesperson told reporters.

The identity of the killed service member has not been released.

Sunday's incident came less than two months after two U.S. soldiers were killed and five others wounded during combat operations in northern Iraq on Aug. 13.

It has been reported that at least seven U.S. servicemen have been killed in Iraq in the fight against the Islamic State group since 2014.

The U.S.-led coalition forces, also comprising troops from France, Britain and other countries, have been in the war-torn country mainly to train Iraqi security forces.

The coalition also conducts air strikes.
