S. African stocks close firmer on Monday

JOHANNESBURG, Sept. 11 (Xinhua) -- The Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) pushed higher on Monday, riding on positive world market momentum.

The South African rand was stronger as the all share index surged 0.51 percent to 56,008.77 points. The top 40 Index was up 0.72 percent to 49,627.54 points.

The central bank, South African Reserve Bank, put the exchange rate at one U.S. dollar to 12.8736 rand, from 12.8247 last Friday.

Financial shares were a mixed bag. Capitec closed 1.29 percent lower at R900.32. Standard Bank was 0.15 percent lower at R162.89, but FirstRand added 0.18 percent to R55. Old Mutual was flat at R34.18.

Platinum shares were however sharply lower as the platinum price dropped 0.95 percent to 997.4 dollars per ounce. Impala Platinum lost 4.24 percent to R39.24 and Anglo American Platinum was 1.99 percent softer at R350.01.

On the JSE, Naspers was up 3.1 percent to R2,952.65 and Mediclinic gained 1.2 percent to R127.9.

AngloGold Ashanti dropped 5.62 percent to R129.89, Gold Fields lost 3.09 percent to R57.16 and Harmony Gold lost 3.11 percent to R25.9.

Packaging group Mpact was 5.84 percent lower at R24.01.

Glencore added 1.16 percent to R62.64. BHP rose 0.39 percent to R240.60. Enditem
