TUNIS, Sept. 7 (Xinhua) -- "The presence of U.S. Marines on the Tunisian territory never implies the presence of a U.S. military base," the outgoing Tunisian Minister of Defense Farhat Horchani said Thursday.

"This project is funded jointly by the United States of America and Germany," he said during a press briefing after the launching of an electronic monitoring and control system along the southeastern border of the country.

According to him, "preserving our borders requires sophisticated techniques and equipments including drones (unmanned aerial vehicles) in addition to foreign assistance with skills that will bring important know-how."

The fight against universal terrorism strongly needs cooperation with friendly countries including the United States and Germany, said Horchani.

German Ambassador to Tunisia, Andreas Renke, revealed that his country's share in the financing of this project.

"Germany will help to support the Tunisian army in order to achieve effective protection of its borders against smuggling and terrorism," said the German diplomat.
