NAY PYI TAW, Aug. 31 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar has planned to promote bamboo production industry in the country in cooperation with China, U Ohn Win, Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation said Thursday.

The minister made the announcement at a ceremony marking the completion of China-Myanmar friendship forest project Thursday.

He said that authorities will promote bamboo production industry and enhance scientific research development with the help of China, aimed at reducing dependency on timber production and deforestation and promoting sustainable management of Myanmar's forest.

Chinese Ambassador Hong Liang noted that China has invested in the initial phase of the project to assist Myanmar in ecological restoration.

Over 121,000 saplings have been planted, covering an area of 100 acres so far, Hong said.

The friendship forest project, located in Nay Pyi Taw, was launched in October 2016.
