TEHRAN, Aug. 28 (Xinhua) -- United Nations Special Envoy for Syria, Staffan de Mistura, on Monday expressed the hope that ongoing diplomatic attempts would result in the decrease of violence in Syria.

The visiting UN diplomat described as "very good and fruitful" his meeting with Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs, Hossein Jaberi Ansari, on the latest developments in Syria.

De Mistura expressed concerns about ongoing "painful" humanitarian situation in the Syrian towns of Fua'a and Kafraya in Idlib province and said that international efforts could bring an end to the violence in the Arab state.

The most important issue for the Syrian people is the decrease of violence, and the political approaches like the meetings in Kazakhstan's capital city of Astana can be helpful in the shrink of violence in Syria, de Mistura told reporters.

He pointed to Iran's key role and its influence in ongoing political talks on Syria.

De Mistura, who arrived in Tehran on Sunday night, is scheduled to meet with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif to discuss the Syrian crisis.

The visit came ahead of the next round of Syria peace talks in Astana, slated to be held in mid-September.
