LOS ANGELES, Aug. 26 (Xinhua) -- American professional boxer Floyd Joy Mayweather Jr. defeated Irish professional mixed martial artist Conor McGregor by technical knockout in the 10th round of their boxing match in Las Vegas, the United States, on Saturday night, picking up the 50th win of his illustrious career.
The match is called the year's biggest combat sports blockbuster by American media and be broadcast on Showtime pay-per-view live from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Fifty million people were estimated to watch the fight.
40-year-old Mayweather is undefeated in his professional career and has not laced up the gloves since cruising past Andre Berto in 2015. But it's the first time for UFC's Lightweight champion McGregor to compete in a professional boxing match.
Mayweather beat 29-year-old McGregor with a series of rights and lefts. The referee stopped the fight with 1:55 remaining in the 10th round.
Mayweather told Showtime Sports' Jim Gray after the fight that McGregor is "a lot better than I thought he was", according to UFC's official Twitter account. He said McGregor is a tough competitor and they gave the fans what they wanted to see.
Sporting a 50-0 career record, Mayweather said the fight with McGregor was the last of his career.
The fight is expected to be the most heavily bet on boxing match in history, and by the time it begins, it could pass the 60 million U.S. dollars in action that the Mayweather-Manny Pacquiao fight saw in 2015, according to CBS News.
