JERUSALEM, Aug. 24 (Xinhua) -- Israel charged Thursday a senior Islamic cleric with "incitement to terrorism" in speeches after a deadly attack on Israeli policemen in the East Jerusalem's contested holy site.
Raed Salah, the leader of the now-outlawed Northern Branch of the Islamic Movement in Israel, was arrested on Aug. 15.
The indictment, submitted to the Haifa Magistrate Court in northern Israel by the Haifa District Attorney, accuses Salah of holding a mass prayer following the burial of the men who shot dead two Israeli police officers in East Jerusalem's Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in July.
In the wake of the attack carried out by Palestinian-Arab citizens of Israel, Israel introduced new security measures at the gate of the Al-Aqsa compound, which sparked deadly clashes between Palestinian worshippers and Israeli police.
Salah has a history of clashes with Israeli authorities. In January, he was released from prison after completing a nine-month sentence for "incitement to violence" and "incitement to racism."
