BRATISLAVA, Aug. 23 (Xinhua) -- Slovakia has raised its terror alert from the first, least severe degree, to the second degree, Slovak Police Corps President Tibor Gaspar announced at a press conference on Wednesday.

"The second-degree alert means that there is little possibility of a terror attack in Slovakia, but one can't be ruled out entirely, either," explained Gaspar.

Gaspar pointed out the fact that several large-scale events are due to be organized in Slovakia in the next few days, including an air show at Sliac in Central Slovakia this weekend, commemorations of the Slovak National Uprising on Aug. 29, and celebrations of Constitution Day on Sept. 1.

"We're coming up to a period that we view as requiring more vigilance beyond ordinary measures," stressed Gaspar, referred on a series of terror attacks in several other countries.

With the second-degree terror alert in place, the police will increase its presence on the streets, with special focus on places with large movements of people, including shopping centres and railway stations.
