DUBAI, Aug. 8 (Xinhua) -- Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah al-Khalid al-Sabah visited the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Tuesday to continue his current mediation tour aimed at ending a standoff between Qatar and the Arab Quartet.

Sheikh Sabah held a meeting with UAE Vice President and Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, during which he handed the latter a letter to UAE President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan from Kuwaiti Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah.

The letter "is related to brotherly relations, the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) process and the latest developments in the region," the state-run news agency WAM reported, without disclosing further details.

Both Kuwait and the UAE are members of the GCC, which also includes Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Oman and Qatar.

Before visiting the UAE, the Kuwaiti foreign minister already visited Saudi Arabia and Egypt on Monday, carrying a letter from the Kuwaiti emir to the Saudi king and Egyptian president respectively.

Kuwait has been mediating between the Saudi-led Arab quartet, which also includes the UAE, Egypt and Bahrain, and Qatar in an attempt to end their diplomatic rift.

The quartet cut diplomatic ties with Qatar and imposed a blockade on the tiny rich Gulf nation since June 5, citing its support of terrorism, interference in their internal affairs and seeking closer ties with their common rival, Iran.

Qatar has strongly denied the charges, insisting that it has been fighting terrorism relentlessly. It has also rejected a list of demands put forward by the Saudi-led bloc for it to change its course, citing it will not back down on issues related to its sovereignty.

No breakthrough has been achieved despite the intensified mediation efforts made not only by Kuwait, but also by the United States, European Union, as well as Turkey.
