TOKYO, July 31 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks closed lower Monday as despite a solid showing on Wall Street late last week adding support, the yen's rise against the U.S. dollar saw the market in a circumspect mood.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average dropped 34.66 points, or 0.17 percent, from Friday to finish the day at 19,925.18, marking a six-week closing low.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, lost 2.61 points, or 0.16 percent, to close at 1,618.61.

Food, electric power and gas, and rubber product-linked issues comprised those that declined the most by the close of play, and falling issues outpaced advancing ones by 1,266 to 685 on the First Section.

Local traders said that buying was inhibited by the yen's appreciation against the U.S. dollar, although losses were trimmed by robust domestic corporate earnings for the April-June period underpinning the market.

On the main section on Monday, 2,334.55 million shares changed hands, rising from Friday's volume of 2,028.09 million shares.

The turnover on the first trading day of the week totaled 2,906.7 billion yen (26.26 billion U.S. dollars). Enditem
