HOUSTON, June 20 (Xinhua) -- As Tropical Storm Cindy approaches the Gulf Coast, Texas Governor Greg Abbott on Tuesday ordered the State Operations Center elevate its readiness from normal conditions to increased readiness starting at 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday.

According to the statement issued by the governor's office, Abbott has activated four Texas Task Force 1 boat squads and two Texas Military Department vehicle squads to respond to any emergencies that may occur as a result of Tropical Storm Cindy.

The Governor has also placed the Department of State Health Services Emergency Medical Task Force, Texas Military Forces Aircraft, and shelter and feeding teams on standby.

"As we have learned in the past, weather patterns can change rapidly and without warning. That is why I am imploring all Texans in the Gulf region to stay updated and heed warnings from your local officials, avoid high water areas and refrain from attempting to drive through roadways or over bridges that have the potential to flood," said Abbott.

This year's hurricane season is forecast to be more active than historical averages.

According to the figures released by the National Hurricane Center in the beginning of June, the long-term averages for the number of named storms, hurricanes, and major hurricanes in this season are 12, 6, and 3 respectively.

Hurricane season runs from June 1 to Nov. 30. Around 85 percent of the action occurs in August, September and October. Historic figure shows the Texas Gulf Coast is at its most vulnerable between mid-July and mid-September.
