Unemployment rate in Slovakia reaches historical minimum in May

BRATISLAVA, June 20 (Xinhua) -- The unemployment rate in Slovakia stood at 7.35 percent in May, down by 0.39 percentage points from the previous month and by 2.1 percentage points year-on-year.

"Unemployment has never in the history of independent Slovakia since 1993 been lower than in May 2017. The registered unemployment rate amounted to 7.35 percent this May, which is close to the record of 7.36 percent reported in May 2008," stated Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico at press conference on Tuesday.

The total number of job seekers stood at 236,934 in May, falling by 11,819 from April and by 65,330 from May 2016.

Among Slovakia's 79 districts, the unemployment rate was down in 77 districts in May. The Slovak labor office registered the highest unemployment rate in the district of Rimavska Sobota (23.31 percent) in central Slovakia, while the lowest rate was posted in the district of Piestany (2.4 percent) in Western Slovakia.
