BUCHAREST, June 14 (Xinhua) -- The major ruling Social Democratic Party announced late Wednesday to withdraw its political support for Prime Minister Sorin Grindeanu, who has a tense relationship with the party's main leaders recently and refused to take the initiative to resign.

The Social Democrats made the decision by voting at the end of a meeting of the National Executive Committee that lasted more than five hours.

The meeting was called by party leader Liviu Dragnea to "analyze the implementation of the governing program and the measures required to recover the delays in the program."

According to sources participating in the meeting, Grindeanu told the meeting that he will not resign.

Grindeanu unexpectedly left the meeting after refuting the assessment of his government's ineffectiveness and insisting on not resigning.

Earlier, Calin Popescu-Tariceanu, leader of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats (ALDE), junior in ruling coalition, announced on Wednesday that his party has voted to withdraw political support for the prime minister, saying that the four ALDE ministers in the cabinet are ready to resign.
