SKOPJE, June 9 (Xinhua) -- Macedonia will soon begin a process of economic reforms coordinated with the European Commission, Macedonian newly appointed Minister of Finance Dragan Tevdovski announced Friday.

Speaking at a conference marking the opening of the fourth cycle of the program for economic reforms, Tevdovski said that the process of planning reforms for the period of 2018-2020 has already started with the appointment of new government in place.

"We have positive signals from the European Commission and it is so important for us to have the support of a strategic partner such as the European Union, because the new reformist government has an enormous burden of reforms ahead of it," Tevdovski told at conference.

He said he supported and recommended a stronger focus on the policies of social cohesion, within the reform process, adding that Macedonia needed to implement the lessons learnt and to improve its weak points identified in the last years.

Present at the conference, EU and OECD representatives, William Neale and Marzena Kisielewska respectively, called on the new government here to stay on the course in attracting foreign investment and reduce the focus on infrastructure development.

Macedonia's new government should focus on regulatory reform and less on public infrastructure investment, Neale from the EU Directorate General for Neighborhood and Enlargement Negotiations said.

The success of the new government in Macedonia will not be measured in the programs that will be prepared but in the events on the ground, OECDs official Kisielewska said.
