UNITED NATIONS, June 4 (Xinhua) -- UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Sunday strongly condemned the terrorist attacks that rattled London the previous night.

"He expresses his condolences to the families of the victims and wishes the injured a swift recovery," said a statement made by the secretary-general's spokesman Stephane Dujarric.

The UN chief hoped that those responsible for the unjustifiable violence would be quickly found and brought to justice.

"The secretary-General expresses his solidarity with the people and the government of the United Kingdom as they fight terrorism and violent extremism," said the statement.

British media reported Sunday that the Islamic State group has claimed responsibility for Saturday's attacks in London, which killed seven people and injured 48 others, 21 of them in critical condition.

British police said 12 people have been arrested so far after the attacks.
