NEW DELHI, June 1 (Xinhua) -- At least three people were drowned and another one missing while taking bath in a river in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh Thursday, a senior police official said.

"The victims, along with seven others, had gone to take bath in Garra river in the state's Hondoi district. All the 11 slipped into deep water. While the four drowned, others swam to safety," he said.

The bodies of the three men have been fished out and sent for an autopsy, the official said, adding they will be soon handed over to the family members. "Search is on for the fourth one," he said.

This is the second incident of drowning in the past two months in India.

In April this year, as many as 13 people drowned in a lake in the southern state of Andhra Pradesh after their boat capsized.

The incident took place at Yerra Timmaraju lake near Guntakal when around 15 people boarded the dinghy for a fun ride in the stream after attending a function.
