MAPUTO, May 24 (Xinhua) -- The leader of Mozambique's main opposition party reassured the country that he is determined to take the non-end truce recently announced by him to an effective peace agreement.

"Dear friends, for me the war ended in 1992, poverty in Mozambique is man-made, Mozambique has resources," Afonso Dlhakama, the leader of Renamo, told sympathizers of his party in Maputo province.

The leader affirmed that the unlimited-date truce is an indicator that the attacks ceased, and indicator for armed forces from both the main opposition and the government to stop with the killings.

"What we want in our country is an effective peace, peace with democracy, peace with justice, and with the public institutions functioning properly," said the leader.

He expressed his concerns over the slow progress from the commissions created late last year to unlock outstanding issues between the two sides.

"The process is slow, I wanted both commissions to have the work concluded and submitted to the assembly of the republic before May 11, it did not happen but I understand," added the leader.

He also confirmed that he is regularly in contact with President Filipe Nyusi and the latest conversation was on this Wednesday and that the talks play an important role in achieving the final success of the process.

Since late December when the first truce was announced, the leader has been seeking for peace. The final move highly expected by Mozambicans is his reappearance to the public.
